Launch of Makers Guild Aims to Bolster Creative Industries
Two well-attended community events late in the year helped launch the Point Roberts Makers Guild, a new initiative of Resilient Point Roberts aimed at growing the local creative economy.
The project’s working mission is to promote locally made art, handcraft, and products, to increase engagement with and support of the cultural economy, and increase the resilience of Point Roberts through community-based education, cultural and economic strengthening.
A kick-off meeting on November 30 introduced the concept of a makers guild, explored why it represents a strong economic opportunity for Point Roberts, and invited community input on priorities for the project. More than 50 people attended, with enthusiasm continuing at a follow-up open house on December 9th that drew over 40 participants.
A makers guild is a community of creators — from professional artisans to hobbyists — who share resources, knowledge, and support for mutual benefit. The Point Roberts Makers Guild seeks to promote handcraft, art, and other locally designed and/or produced goods, as well as uplift the makers who live and work here. While this is not a new idea in the community, it has been revived due to the opportunity to operate out of 5-Mile-Square studio (previously the National Real Estate building) on Gulf Rd.
Early feedback shows strong support for a cooperatively operated retail store featuring Point Roberts–made products, as well as interest in a makerspace and small workshop/classroom spaces. While the current location is limited in size, organizers hope demonstrated community support will help secure future funding for expansion.
